City and district rankings from federal incident data · 2021-22 collection
Coeur d'Alene District comes out safer than 99% of ranked US districts in the 2021-22 Civil Rights Data Collection. That result rests on 8 schools — the ones in the district's scored set whose records were complete enough to grade. It says something real about those schools. It does not speak for every building in the district.
What this page can tell you is narrower than it first appears, and more useful for it. Idaho reported 801 schools to the 2021-22 collection. We publish a safety score for 402 of them. The others are not missing by oversight. We compare each school to roughly 1,500 schools nationally that are closest to it in enrollment and teach the same grade levels, look at what those peers reported, and set a deliberately low bar. A school that reports far less than schools its own size normally do has not shown us evidence of safety, so we withhold a score instead of inventing one. The absence of a number is the method working.
For 97 Idaho schools — 12.1% of the state — we grade the reporting doubtful. The national share is 11.3%. Idaho sits close to the country as a whole, a little above it. Read that as a fact about records, not about children. A doubtful grade means a school's account of its own year is one we cannot verify, not that anything happened there. The comparison is also not adjusted for state: differences between states in this data are differences in reporting behavior, and treating them as differences in child safety would be a mistake.
There are 186 school districts in Idaho. Only 21 have enough scoreable schools to rank against districts elsewhere. A district needs several schools with believable records before a ranking means anything, and most Idaho districts are too small to clear that.
Among the ranked ones: Joint School District No. 2 is safer than 91% of ranked US districts, on 36 of the 60 schools in its scored set. Idaho Falls District, 90%, on 12 of 21. Nampa School District, 80%, on 16 of 25. Lewiston Independent District, 67%, on 8 of 12.
Start with your own school. If it has a score, the record behind it held up. If it doesn't, that is worth asking your district about directly.
Percentile is against all ranked U.S. cities (higher = safer). Only cities with ≥5 trustworthy-data schools are ranked. Home value is Zillow's ZHVI.
