City and district rankings from federal incident data · 2021-22 collection
Ohio divides its public schools among 993 school districts. That fact shapes everything on this page. A district needs several schools with records complete enough to score before we will rank it against districts elsewhere in the country, and in a state with that many districts, most are too small to clear the bar. Sixty Ohio districts are ranked here. The other districts aren't absent because their schools fared badly. They are absent because there isn't enough verified data to compare them fairly, and we would rather say so than guess.
Of the 3,689 schools in the state, 1,651 have a published safety score. A score means we believe the school's incident reporting — that its records are consistent with what schools of its size and grade range normally file. Where you see no score, the school's records did not meet that bar. That is the method working as intended, not a hole in it.
For 697 Ohio schools — 18.9% of the state — we grade the reporting doubtful. The national share is 11.3%. This is a statement about paperwork, not about children. A doubtful grade means a school reported almost nothing while schools of the same size and grade levels typically report several incidents or more. It does not mean anything happened there, and it does not mean anything didn't. It means the record can't be checked. Comparisons on this site are made against roughly 1,500 similar schools nationally, not against other Ohio schools, so a gap like this one reflects how districts and states handle reporting — not how safe their students are.
Among the ranked districts, Strongsville City and Jackson Local come out safer than 99% of ranked U.S. districts, followed by Solon City and Painesville City Local at 98% and Xenia Community City at 96%. Even in these districts the picture is partial: 7 of the 9 schools in Strongsville City's scored set have data complete enough to score, and 5 of the 6 in Jackson Local. Read the ranking as a statement about the schools we could verify, and nothing more.
Percentile is against all ranked U.S. cities (higher = safer). Only cities with ≥5 trustworthy-data schools are ranked. Home value is Zillow's ZHVI.
