Puerto Rico runs its public schools as a single system. There is one school district here, not hundreds, so this page works differently from most of the state pages on this site. There is no list of districts to compare against one another and no local board to look up. What you can look up is your child's school.

Start with what a grade means. We compare each school to roughly 1,500 schools across the country closest to it in enrollment that teach the same grade levels. Among those peers we look only at schools that reported something, and we take the 25th percentile of their incident rate. That is a deliberately low bar. A school reporting less than a quarter of what that bar implies for its size has not given evidence of safety.

What the 2021-22 records show

Of the 853 schools in Puerto Rico, 25 have records complete enough for us to publish a safety score. Another 337 fall in our doubtful range, D or E: schools whose enrollment normally comes with several reported incidents, or ten or more, that reported almost none. That is 39.5% of the territory's schools. Nationally, the same share is 11.3%.

Read that gap carefully. It is a statement about records, not about children. The federal collection measures what a school reported, not what happened inside the building. A doubtful grade means we cannot verify the record. It does not mean the school is dangerous. And because the peer comparison is national and not adjusted for state or territory, differences between places in this data are differences in reporting practice.

The one district, the Puerto Rico Department of Education, does have enough scoreable schools to rank, and it comes out safer than 59% of ranked US districts. That figure rests on the 25 of the 843 schools in this district's scored set whose data is complete enough to score. It is a narrow base. Treat it as a footnote, not a verdict on the system.

So the honest use of this page is school by school. If your school shows a score, we believe its records. If it shows none, that is the method working, and the question worth asking the school is a simple one: what did you report for 2021-22, and to whom?
