City and district rankings from federal incident data · 2021-22 collection
A parent looking up a school on this page will find one of two things: a safety score, or a plain explanation of why there isn't one. Both are real answers. Neither is a guess.
The 2021-22 Civil Rights Data Collection covers 2,469 schools in Missouri. We publish a safety score for 1,481 of them. The rest reported too little for us to say anything we could stand behind, so we say nothing. That is the method working, not a hole in it.
The thing worth noticing in Missouri's file is how few schools land in our doubtful category. We grade 128 schools D or E, which is 5.2% of the state's schools, against 11.3% nationally. That is a fact about paperwork. A D or an E means schools of the same size and grade range normally report some incidents, and this one reported almost none — records we cannot verify, not violence we found. So a low share of doubtful records does not mean Missouri children are safer than children elsewhere. Every grade compares a school to schools across the country of similar size teaching similar grades, and that comparison is not adjusted for state. Differences between states in this collection are differences in reporting behavior.
Missouri has 565 school districts. Of those, 75 have enough scoreable schools to be ranked against districts nationally. A district falls outside the ranking when too few of its schools left records complete enough to grade — often because it runs only a handful of schools to begin with. Absence from the list is not a mark against a district.
Among the ranked districts, OZARK R-VI comes out safer than 100% of ranked US districts, with 7 of the 8 schools in its scored set complete enough to score. LADUE and KIRKWOOD R-VII each rank safer than 98%, on 5 of 8 and 6 of 9 schools respectively. FOX C-6 SCHOOL DISTRICT is safer than 97% of ranked districts on 12 of 18, and BELTON 124 safer than 96% on 6 of 8.
Read a score as what it is: evidence that a school kept records we believe, and that those records show few incidents for a school its size. Read a missing score as an open question, and a good one to ask your principal.
Percentile is against all ranked U.S. cities (higher = safer). Only cities with ≥5 trustworthy-data schools are ranked. Home value is Zillow's ZHVI.
